Influence that Echoes in College Football

Nevin Karey Shapiro is the Godfather of Name, Image and Likeness ( NIL )  in College Football. More than a decade after his involvement with the legendary University of Miami football program, the name Nevin Shapiro remains more relevant than ever, as college athletes may now be compensated through University NIL Collectives.

The Catalyst Who Redefined Athlete Compensation

Although others may have provided illegal benefits to athletes prior to his time, Nevin raised the bar to a mythological level becoming the catalyst for compensating college athletes today. Nevin continues to be an advocate for college athletes and breaking the hold the NCAA has on revenues generated by college football.

Nevin Shapiro: The Man, The Myth, The Controversy

Nevin is a former South Florida business mogul, who built a net worth of $269 million by the age of 34 in 2005. A visionary who created an arbitrage in grocery diversion, Nevin used his wealth to establish the foundation for a massive real estate empire and other business interests. For years Nevin was considered the King of South Beach, having all access and rubbing elbows with athletes, celebrities, politicians and other high power business brokers.

A Journey Through Injustice and Redemption

Injustice and Redemption

In 2010 the dream came crashing down as Nevin was wrongfully forced to plead guilty to securities fraud and money laundering. Nevin served 8 years in the roughest prisons on the east coast and then transferred to a minimal security prison for 18 months prior to being sent to home confinement under the First Step Act for 4 ½ years before finally receiving clemency in December of 2024.

A New Chapter in Media and Advocacy

With his unique insight and experience in business, college athletics and prison incarceration, Nevin is a talented podcaster under the Beyond Media Group umbrella. Nevin’s passions include prison reform and helping young adults and professionals understand the importance and consequences of the choices they make in life through public speaking at both the university and corporate levels.

testimonials

I am the recently retired global leader of Fraud Risk Management services at KPMG LLP. For approximately the past 14 years, I have been a member of the accounting faculty at Fordham University, where, among other courses, I teach Forensic Accounting and Business Risks in a Global Digital Economy. Several times, Mr. Shapiro has graciously agreed to talk with my students about his story. For over 30 years, I have been teaching full- and part-time, and I can say that I have had few guest speakers who delivered such a powerful message about the importance of judgment and business risk. Mr. Shapiro delivers his presentations in an understated manner that, at first, subtly hides the power of his message. It was a story of someone who lost his moral compass and would pay a heavy price for that lapse. But also a story of a man who, after much introspection, demonstrates remorse and contrition. After Mr. Shapiro’s lectures, my students always thanked me for allowing him to talk to the class.
